Onyx Neon 2010 Northwest Novelists Contest

Everybody has a story to tell. What's yours?

If you're a writer living in the Pacific Northwest, and you've written an original, edited draft of a novel (60,000 words or more), we want to hear from you this May. We're a small press. We love finding books from new and upcoming writers that so-called traditional publishers might not publish and getting them in print. We also love the Northwest. Most of all, we love to encourage people to write.

The Contest

Our contest opened on May 1, 2010. The submissions deadline closed on May 31, 2010. We judged all submissions by the end of summer 2010. Our criteria include originality, quality, editing ease, and the kind of quirkiness you get from living in the Pacific Northwest.

All submissions remain property of their submitters; you keep your copyright. We will not sell, trade, loan, or reveal any of your information or your submission to anyone other than the judges, and that only for the purpose of reviewing submissions for the contest.

Winners

We chose two winners and one honorable mention.

Honorable mention: Lisa Olsen's Moonsong had memorable characters and conflicts, and just enough magic to keep us wondering what would happen next. It's the little quirks in her characters that made them interesting. Well done!

Winner: Katarina Rose's Into the Silence is a careful, thematic tale of pain and recovery that crafts an effective portrait of violence and its aftermath. A few careful turns of phrases here and there amazed us. Wonderfully written!

Winner: Aja Miller's Rotholme surprised us with its ease. The story drew us in, but we noticed the deliberates choice of scene and theme to tell a much deeper, much bigger story than a plot summary would reveal. Excellent work!

We've contacted the winners and are finishing up prize details now. Thanks to all submitters and watchers of the contest; we plan to do something similar next year.
